OVERVIEW
This project aims to create a material customization service to give more possibilities to materials and reduce pollution in traditional dyeing process.
CONTEXT
In the Feisi Dyeing Workshop which focuses on traditional dyeing, workers clean the skins of cattle, sheep, camels and other animals with knives, and then immerse them in the lime tank. After the fat and protein are completely dissolved, the skin will become exquisite and soft. After that, the leather is taken out for cleaning and then dyed in a tank. The tank is filled with a mixture of lime water and pigeon wastes. The dyes used by local people are made from natural plants rather than chemical stains.
The traditional dyeing process is mainly controlled by dye workers, and thus is also subject to certain restriction.
How can we apply the traditional materials in more scenes and conditions?
How can we endow the traditional process with a dynamic role?
WHAT IF I...
I want to diversify the leather dyeing process. The modular and open design provide different variables for the leather dyeing process, giving the leather dyeing more possibilities, making the leather a more inclusive carrier of materials, acting as a medium to connect people with their environment..
